The Power of Jesus and the Call to Follow Him

The Power of Jesus and the Call to Follow Him

Luke 9:1-22

Jesus calls ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things through the power and authority He provides. The twelve disciples were sent to proclaim the Kingdom of God, heal the sick, and cast out demons. They were instructed to depend not on material possessions or personal abilities, but on Jesus’ provision and authority. This same calling extends to every believer, wherever God has placed them, whether across the world or just across the street.

As the Gospel spreads, lives are transformed, and a legacy of faith is established. Yet the greatest example of humility and obedience is Jesus Himself, who left His glory, took the form of a servant, and willingly submitted to the Father’s plan.

When faced with a hungry multitude, the disciples saw only their limitations, but Jesus demonstrated that what is impossible for man is possible with God. He took five loaves and two fish, gave thanks, and multiplied them to feed thousands. This reveals that God’s provision is sufficient, that gratitude must replace complaining, and that believers are not the source of provision but stewards entrusted to distribute what God provides.

The central question then becomes: Who is Jesus? Peter confessed Him as the Christ of God, the Son of the living God. Knowing Christ also reveals our identity and purpose in Him. Yet Jesus makes clear that His mission is not merely to perform miracles, but to suffer, die, and rise again on the third day for the salvation of mankind.

Following Jesus means more than seeking His blessings. It means recognising Him as Lord, surrendering our plans, dreams, resources, and entire lives to His authority. The One who can multiply what we place in His hands also has the right to govern everything we are.
