A Good Host for Jesus

A Good Host for Jesus

Luke 7:36-50

Jesus is invited to eat at the home of Simon, a Pharisee who doubts that Jesus is a prophet. During the meal, a woman known for her sinful reputation approaches Jesus, weeping at His feet, washing them with her tears, drying them with her hair, kissing them, and anointing them with expensive oil. Simon silently judges both Jesus and the woman, assuming that a true prophet would know what kind of woman is touching Him and would never allow it.

Knowing Simon’s thoughts, Jesus tells a parable about two debtors whose debts are forgiven. One owes much more than the other, and both are unable to repay. The one forgiven more will naturally love more. Simon correctly identifies the answer, but Jesus then exposes the contrast between his lack of hospitality and the woman’s overwhelming love and devotion. Simon offered no water for Jesus’ feet, no kiss of greeting, and no oil, while the woman gave Him everything she could.

Jesus reveals that He knows the woman’s sinful past, yet her sins have been forgiven. Her actions express deep gratitude and love, while those who believe they have little to be forgiven often love little. He declares that her sins are forgiven, that her faith has saved her, and that she can go in peace.

The encounter challenges the way Jesus is welcomed into everyday life. A relationship with Him should not be treated as a religious obligation or a way to obtain blessings when needed. Instead, it is an invitation to fellowship, rooted in gratitude for the forgiveness and salvation received. Time spent in prayer, Scripture, and worship is not about earning His love but responding to it. Remembering how much has been forgiven should lead to a life overflowing with love, devotion, and a desire to spend time with Jesus.
