The Beginning of Luke: Faith in God’s Timing

Luke opens his Gospel by explaining that he carefully investigated eyewitness accounts so readers could have confidence in the truth about Jesus. Written as the first part of a two-volume work with Acts, it presents an orderly account of Christ’s life, emphasizing His humanity, compassion, prayer life, joy, fellowship, and concern for outsiders.

The narrative begins during the reign of Herod with Zechariah and Elizabeth, a faithful elderly couple who had long endured the pain of childlessness. While serving in the temple, Zechariah is visited by the angel Gabriel, who announces that their prayers have been answered and that they will have a son named John. This child will be filled with the Holy Spirit, live a life set apart for God, and prepare the people for the coming Messiah. Although Zechariah struggles to believe the message after years of disappointment, God’s promise remains certain, and his temporary silence becomes a reminder that God’s word will be fulfilled in His perfect timing.

Six months later, Gabriel appears to Mary, a young virgin in Nazareth, announcing that she has been chosen to miraculously bear Jesus, the promised Messiah and eternal King. Unlike Zechariah’s unbelief, Mary’s question seeks understanding, and she responds with humble submission: “Let it be to me according to your word.” Encouraged by the news that Elizabeth is also miraculously pregnant, Mary willingly embraces God’s calling despite the personal cost.

These parallel birth announcements reveal that nothing is impossible with God. His timing often differs from human expectations, yet His promises never fail. Believers are encouraged to persevere in prayer, trust God’s purposes even during long seasons of waiting, and remain willing servants who respond in faith when God calls.
